Stress is a factor that has affected everyone’s life. Stress is a very common among college students. Stress is the how you respond to demands that are place on you. What is more a problem than having stress are the results that occur after students suffer from having stress. College students stress over finance, grades, peers, and time management. Finance is a major reason for the average stress among college students. Students stress over trying to finance their college education and having finances to have the necessities of life. Some students have problems paying their tuition, purchasing books, and room and board. Lori Johnston, associated press writer, says “95 percent of college students say the nation’s economic crisis impacted their family’s finances last year” (Johnson 2010). Johnston’s statement gives credence that finances are a problem for students and causes stress. Most students are dependent or codependent on their families during college years. With the prices of colleges rising the stress of being able to afford is almost crippling for some student. CBS news says “When low-income and middle-income students receive federal grants to attend college, the argument goes; the institutions simply raise their prices to reflect this aid” (O’Shaunessy 2012). The cost of college has increased due to the students receiving grants and the results is colleges increase pricing. When students can’t find funds it causes stress leads them to have a loss of appetite. The loss of appetite results in weight lost and that can lead to other physical conditions. Anxiety and depression becomes a problems due to stress over finances . Depression is also a direct result of these students have stress over financing their college career. Anxiety can lead to panic attacks. Stressing over finance and detrimental to a student and cause long lasting physical and mental problems, that not only bleeds in to other aspects of life. Grades are essentially a part of any student’s life. The goal of students is to obtain good grades and then graduate. The pursuit to garner and maintain good grades causes stress for many students. Berit Brogaard, an accomplished cognitive neuroscientist, states in his article on academic stress “According to the American College Health Association's 2006 survey of college students, the one greatest health obstacle to college students' academic performance was academic stress.” (Brogaard 2014)The stress of grades causes many students to underperform. The underperformance is due to lack of having a clear focus on assignments. Students become overwhelmed with the work load and demands that college studies require. Stress over grades results in lack of sleep. There are many problems that occur due to sleep deprivation one major one is having health issues. Bogard says” researchers now believe that one of the main contributing factors to academic stress is sleep deprivation.” (Brogaard 2014) Research shows that not stress causes students to not get the rest needed. Proper rest is needed by everyone in order to be functional. Sleep deprivation has resulted in heart attacks, heart failure, high blood pressure and strokes. The reality is if a student is unhealthy then his grades will suffer. Although for most student stress has a negative reaction it for other student has a positive response. Some perform better when they are under pressure. Deadlines and challenging work causes many to excel and perform at higher and greater work ethic. Having some stress in the life a students can be beneficial. A student must learn to not allow stress to negatively affect them .This may be a challenge but can be achieved by remaining diligent and focused. Peers contribute the stress levels of students. Many students have a fear of not being socially accepted. This fear causes...
