Influence of Visual Media
Media has changed so many aspects in American culture, and the one that has probably influenced people the most would have to be visual entertainment. In many ways has it been proven to be beneficial but it has also had its negative effects as well. There are many people who revolve their lives around television and allow it to control their lives, but there are also people who use it for the sole purpose of finding out current events in the world. Television has definitely helped to create our culture by making an impact on books, newspapers and magazines design and content. Television has been one of the biggest influences on American families today. It is stated by the Department of Education that children/young adults watch as much as 4-5 hours of television a day. Many families use television as a form of family bonding time, for example, family movie night, watching sporting events, and watching weekly episodes of their favorite TV shows. This negatively affects families because it doesn’t require families to socialize or to leave the comfort of their own home. Television also allows people to be lazy; people aren’t required to get off their couch to find out current events in the world. It could be beneficial for people who live busy lives and don’t have time to go out to buy a newspaper or someone who has kids and spends most of their time at home. Either way, the influence of television is constantly expanding and changing the way people live.
Commercials are also a way to influence and manipulate Americans into thinking and believing that certain aspects and products are better for them than they may actually be. A way that television can brain wash people is by making them believe that by eating certain foods or taking a pill can solve their problems with weight issues.
