Today, it is no secret that America is overweight. Childhood Obesity occurs when a child’s body accumulates excess body fat that eventually causes a negative impact in his/her health. Human beings have different body sizes that should weigh proportionally with their height as illustrated by health scientists. The percentage of children six to eleven years old in the United States who were obese increased from seven percent to nearly twenty percent from 1980 to 2008. Childhood obesity is a disorder where a child has too much unnecessary fat. It is sad that this is called a disorder or a disease because of the type of society we live in today. Many children who are overweight suffer from medical to self-esteem issues. Some even suffer from psychological effects. There are so many ways for kids to prevent becoming obese.
You are considered obese if your weight is twenty percent more above the normal weight for your age. The major cause of obesity in children and adolescence is eating too much and having limited exercise. However, this is not always apparent because some cases of obesity are brought about by genetic factors. That is, if your child has was born form a family of members who are overweight, then the child may end up being obese. Parents that are considered neglected either feed their child food with too much carbs, sugar, and fat or do not encourage enough physical activity to burn it off. Another cause is the television because it takes place of fun activities that could be done outside, like biking, playing sports, or swimming. Another lifestyle factor that contributes to childhood obesity is that more parents are working late, leading to fewer family meals and more ordering from restaurants, whose food is generally higher in fat content.
