Obesity is a disease that is becoming increasingly common around the world. Some of the effects of obesity are heart disease, respiratory problems and lack of self-confidence. There are many factors that can triggers obesity. Three main contributors to obesity are diet, lifestyle, and genetics. Diet plays an important role in the genesis of obesity. As societies become increasingly reliant on energy-dense fast food meals, the association between fast food consumption and obesity becomes more concerning. In the United States, consumption of fast food has tripled, and calorie intake from fast food has quadrupled between 1977 and 1995. Portion size of meals is also a major factor in triggering obesity. In fact, the portion size of many pre-package and restaurant foods have increased in both the United States and Denmark since the 1970s. Consumption of sweetened drinks is also considered to be a major contributor to obesity. In the past twenty years, teenage consumption of soft drinks has doubled in the United States. A sedentary lifestyle plays an important role in the increase of obesity. There has been a large shift towards less physically demanding work in the world, and currently at least 60% of the world’s population gets insufficient exercise. This is primarily due to the increasing use of mechanized transportation and more labour-saving technology at home. The World Health Organization states that people worldwide are taking up less active recreational pursuits. In addition, in both children and adults, scientists show that there is an association between television viewing time and the risk of obesity. For example, a 2008 meta-analysis discovered an increased rate of childhood obesity with increased media exposure, with rates increasing proportionally to time spent watching television.
